Trans Justice Funding and Organizing: Honoring Legacies and Building Futures

Friday, April 1st · 9:30am — 11:00am

With the recent passage of same-sex marriage, increased visibility of transgender people in the media, and the growing momentum around the Black Lives Matter movement, there has also been an increased occurrence of violence targeting trans and gender nonconforming people particularly trans women of color, continued criminalization and incarceration of Black and Brown trans and gender nonconforming people, and the introduction of discriminatory city and state policies. Now more than ever, LGBTQ funders and other progressive racial and economic justice funders must invest in supporting the work and lives of trans and gender nonconforming people and communities.

This plenary will open the conference by grounding participants in current trans organizing and movement building efforts across the country, providing an overview of the current landscape of trans funding, sharing some successful trans funding models, and giving participants an opportunity to dialogue and strategize with their funding peers about mobilizing resources for trans communities. The key focus areas will be: criminalization and violence; health and wellness; advocacy, policy, and organizing; and economic opportunity and employment for trans and gender nonconforming communities. Panelists will share their stories and experiences of trans organizing and movement building and make clear how a broader gender justice framework is critical for the liberation of all people.
