What We Do

The Out in the South Initiative aims to increase funding for LGBTQ related work in the South. We do this by

  1. Engaging in conversation with funders about how to hone grantmaking strategies in partnership with Southern communities that ultimately make a positive impact on the lives of LGBTQ communities throughout the region. We offer trainings and educational materials that help funders understand how LGBTQ issues intersect with their current funding priorities and how they can support local efforts that create more LGBTQ inclusive communities.

  2. Building the Out in the South Funder Network, which is for funder representatives who would like to have conversations with each other, to learn more about how Southern LGBTQ populations and issues intersect with their own funding priorities, and to share experiences and best practices. The Network is comprised of both funders that have a long history of supporting LGBTQ issues in the South, as well as those that are new to funding in the sector or considering it for the first time.

  3. Catalyzing sustainable philanthropy through the Out in the South Fund, which is a pooled fund that enables foundations and other donors to combine their resources to award planning grants and matching funds to stimulate the creation and growth of local LGBTQ funds housed at various public foundations across the South. The unique power of this model is its two-level impact: (1) it builds up local LGBTQ funds as a sustainable source of LGBTQ philanthropy; and (2) local LGBTQ funds in turn serve as a vehicle for strengthening local LGBTQ community organizations. The RFP for the Out in the South Fund will be released in 2016. Stay tuned for more information.
